Every Mother Counts
We are two weeks away from the special day we celebrate the mothers in our lives. During this happy time, we shower those we love with gratitude and gifts of appreciation and for some of us, quietly remember those we have loved and lost. As somber as the latter is, it is an unfortunate daily occurrence here in the U.S. that is not discussed publicly. I learned about Every Mother Counts through their running team and felt the need to bring awareness to their support for prenatal obstacles women face.
Every Mother Counts is Christy Turlington Burns’ non-profit organization “dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother” here in the U.S. and abroad. 100% of Every Mother Counts proceeds work to provide solid care in the face of these three barriers: transportation, education and supplies. This year so far they have raised almost $2.7 million, impacted over 148,000 lives and volunteered or advocated on 8.6 million occasions. There are many ways to get involved if this is an issue that hits close to home.
Last year, Christy directed her first film No Woman No Cry, a documentary that visits women in Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala and the U.S.
I am a born and raised California girl who grew up in Los Angeles. After graduating with my Bachelor’s degree in sunny San Diego, I planted roots with my new husband and French Bulldog puppy. I hold a Master’s in Education and have spent a majority of my professional career in Higher Education. I enjoy traveling, learning, cooking, wine, Pilates, attending concerts and reading for both my book clubs.
